Ahh, the stressful life of a wine blogger.
On June 7, I had the honor of attending a trade event spotlighting the red wines of Spain’s Ribera del Duero region.
The Ribera region is located approximately two hours horth of Madrid and is the meeting place of four Spanish provences: Burgos, Segovia, Soria and Valladolid.
Climate is extreme in almost all aspects: hot summers, cold winters, and little rainfall. These factors, along with the high elevation of their vines (as high as 3,100 feet above sea level), result in a much higher percentage of red wine produced, compared to whites and roses.
The prime grape produced in this region is Tempranillo. In this region, unlike the Rioja, the Tempranillo grape is not blended with others (you may see grapes such as Syrah, Garnacha, and Cabernet Sauvignon blended in with the star grape in other parts of Spain).
I’d like to thank the kind team at Drink Ribera, who organized this event and allowed me to tape the following presentation from April S. Cullom. She is certified as a Spanish Wine Educator by the Wine Academy of Spain. Ms. Cullom gave a great history of this region and explains what distinguishes the Ribera wines from those produced elsewhere in the world using the same Tempranillo grape.
